Sand Hill Cranes are “cherished members of the Florida ecosystem.” Some stand 4-feet tall and can be seen in urban neighborhoods and on many golf courses. When humans feed the cranes they put these majestic birds in harms way. They have been killed crossing roads to get to food in yards. Although, some feeding is accidental such as feed that has spilled on the ground from a bird feeder. Feeding can lead to the cranes becoming aggressive toward people. They see their reflection in car windows and they have been known to damage screens and plants. In 2002 the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission made it illegal to feed the cranes. So, the next time you see a sand hill crane – keep them safe and DO NOT FEED THEM!
